Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei

The entire megami tensei series starts with a novel called Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, written by Aya Nishitani in 1987. The concept for the book started off with the author thinking that computer code is kind of like writing out a magic ritual and he though that doing black magic on a PC was cool, so there came the idea to summon demons from a computer. This novel was then adapted into a direct to video OVA.

The OVA and book both have roughly the same plot which stars out two main characters, Akemi Nakajima and Yumiko Shirasagi. Nakajima is a FUCKING LOSER with no friends who spends all of his time programming on his computer. Yumiko is... uh, well she's a girl and the new transfer student, she doesn't have much of a personality tbh. It turns out that Nakajima and Yumiko are reincarnations of the Japanese gods Izanagi and Izanami respectively, hence the title "Megami Tensei" which translates into "Reincarnation of the Goddess".

Nakajima is trying to make a demon summoning program on his computer to exact revenge on his classmates who bullied him. With this program he communicates with the powerful demon, Loki who will obey Nakajima as long as he brings Loki human sacrifices. Then theres a scene where Nakajima's teacher is having the 1987 version of e-sex with Loki, and also Yumiko is secretly there and then Loki materializes out of the computer and absorbs all of his brainwashed classmates into his body effectively killing the entire school population. Nakajima tries to reason with Loki telling him to stop but then Loki grabs him with weird pink goo and this sounds like the plot of a shitty tentacle hentai, but luckily Yumiko comes to the rescue with her cool Izanami laser eye powers and frees Nakajima and they both flee in some kinda portal but not before Loki scratches Yumiko's back, injuring her.

Then they're in some random ass field and Nakajima cries like a little bitch about this girl he's known for maybe a week. And then Nakajima pulls out a portable laptop that he just has?? idk why, and then summons the demon Cerberus which he also just has for some reason. Riding on Cerberus, Nakajima and Yumiko go to where Loki is now (which isn't the school anymore idk why) and then Nakajima gest a cool sword which i'm pretty sure is the Hino-kagatsuchi which is featured as a very strong sword in most early megaten games. Nakajima kills Loki with the cool sword and then thats the end of the OVA. if my explanation was weird, just watch it yourself its on youtube.

The video game company Atlus, which was only formed in 1986 developed a game for the Nintendo Famicom based off the Digital Devil Story novel. This was published by Namco and released September 11 1987. The video game was directed by Kouji Okada, more commonly known by his nickname 'Cozy' who would later direct most megaten games and spinoffs up until 2003. The music was done by Tsukasa Masuko who would also continue to work on many early megaten titles. The author of the novel, Nishitani was also quite involved during the development of Megami Tensei and despite not being involved in the production later games he has played them and quite likes the series.

About デジタルデビル物語 : 女神転生

When you start the game you are given fifteen stat points for both your characters. There are five stat options to choose from, STRENGTH, WISDOM, ATTACK, AGILITY and LUCK.

Nakajima | ナカジマ

For Nakajima I reccomend putting all 15 initial stat points into STRENGTH which give him a higher defence. For the rest of his stats I reccomend leveling up both ATTACK and AGILITY mosty evenly. You can also put some points into LUCK, if you want which I'm pretty sure makes it easier to negotiate with demons and have them by your side. Do NOT put any points into WISDOM for Nakajima because that affects the magic spells and Nakajima is unable to cast any spells. He is the only character who can use the COMP which allows you to negotiate with demons and also summon and return demons both in and outside of battle.

Yumiko | ユミコ
